Captain Montgomery Mortimer of the Foundation for Space Exploration(FSE) had become well respected amongst peers. He was famous for the grandiose and over-the-top discoveries he made for his government. However, Monty was a showboat - obsessed with finding and documenting new areas of space simply to receive accolades and praise rather than for the joy of discovery. Upon publishing his most recent book, Across the Stars and Over the Moons by Montgomery Mortimer, Monty received public backlash for the first time in his life.

He was ostracized for his negligence of native species, his arrogant misrepresentation of facts, and his clear disregard for the truth in favor of spectacle. Upon further examination of his work, the FSE discovered blatant lies in Monty’s publications, thus he was stripped of his Captain status and excommunicated from his team and ship. Monty spent the next few years trying to overturn the decision in the courts and trying to change his public perception by appearing on campy talk shows, but the damage was done. That is, until his 30th birthday.

On the morning of his 30th birthday, Montgomery Mortimer announced that he had bought his own ship and was setting out on a one-man expedition into the stars to accurately map what he found and to prove that he is the greatest explorer to ever live. With lukewarm response and a lackluster interest from the public, Montgomery Mortimer set out to do just that. But only 72 hours after his departure, transmissions to his ship cut out, and the former Captain was never heard from again.
